METALLIC AND PEARLESCENT FINISHES OVERVIEW

Metallic Special Effects

The visual sensation usually associated with metals is its metallic shine. This cannot be reproduced by a simple solid colour, because the shiny effect is due to the material’s brightness varying with the surface angle to the light source.

A metallic colour is achieved by adding powdered metal into the paint. The metal in the paint retains its ability to react to atmospheric conditions. This enables the acceleration of oxidation creating interesting rust and patina effects if desired or alternatively the surface can be clear sealed to prevent further oxidisation.

There are a range of metallic effects available;

  • Gold for example, Rose Gold, Antique Gold, Bronze Gold
  • Copper
  • Bronze
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Tin

Pearlescent Special Effects

The main benefit of pearlescent paint is an aesthetic one. Instead of the standard monotone finish, you get a new, rich color scheme. The light splits into many different colours, and instead of just a sparkle, you get deep and varying shades of colour that change with your angle.

Like metallic paint, pearlescent paint contains tiny pieces of ceramic material. These little pieces of ceramic, or “mica”, both reflect light and refract it. To take you back to your school science class, this means that the light slows down as it passes through the mica.

Metallics and Pearlescent effects are perfect for adding a touch of luxury to any room, an ideal solution to add an extra dimension to a wide range of  interior feature walls, doors, joinery and furniture.

We are constantly inspired by the sophisticated radiance of gleaming metal that reflects light and creates the appearance of brushed, precious metals.

POPULAR QUESTIONS

  • What surfaces can metallics be applied to?

Metallic and Pearlescent paints can be applied to metal and to most suitably prepared plasterboard, plaster, wood, masonry and previously painted surfaces.

  • Can I use metallics outside?

    Yes you can.

Any object or surface can be instantly aged and given a weatherbeaten, rustic finish, the metal in the paint retains its ability to react to atmospheric conditions.

On exterior surfaces be mindful that oxidisation/rust stains (caused by run-off) may appear on adjacent surfaces. To prevent these stains we recommend finishing with a clear sealer

Clear sealers are available in in matt through to gloss. We can advise you based on your situation.
